Two good pet waste products - two very different prices

As an environmentally conscious individual and pet owner, it is my best practice to use only biodegradable bags within both my home and my pet sitting business. This is everything from garden waste to household waste to pet waste. I have been following this practice for many years now and have been regularly purchasing packages of 120 pet waste bags for $8.99 plus whatever tax is appropriate at the time. Although I have paid as much as $11.99 before tax. The brand of pet waste bags that I have been using is called EcoBio Oxo-Biodegradable Bags and can be found at pet stores and veterinarians. Recently, as a part of a Christmas gift package from my sister (who owns and runs Oliver's Pet Supplies in Nanaimo, BC) for my dogs Roman and Madeline, I received a new brand of pet waste bags from a Canadian company out of Edmonton, Alberta. This brand which is completely new to me is called World's Best PoopBags and while this is a Canadian company, I did note that the bags are made in China, which may explain the price difference. These bags are quite cute actually, sturdy, well-sized to pick up even the BIG ones and are biodegradable. The most attractive thing about these bags, that is very important to point out is, that they retail for $2.99 before tax. So that is a difference of $6.00 between World's Best PoopBags and EcoBio Oxo-Biodegradable Bags. For me this is a savings of about $150 a year before tax. Now that is not alot you may say - but that is a reasonable dinner out for two, a nice donation to my favourite charity or a couple of bags of dog food for Roman and Madeline. So I say, it is alot! Need I say more. If you cannot find World's Best PoopBags at your local pet supply store - ask them to bring them in for you. They would be quite foolish not too - yes the store won't make as much money on them but it is also important for them not to gouge the customer and to provide the customer with a sensibly priced product. Thank you to all my Signature Pet Services' clients as this has been a truly awesome year for both me and my business. Both you and your pets have been an inspiration to me and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your loyal support and trust. Thanks to you, Signature Pet Services has had an extremely solid year and has had a very healthy (yet manageable) growth. I will continue to be both owner and the only service provider and there will be no contracting out. This way I ensure the very best pet and client care is provided at all times. Of course, my supportive husband is always there in the event of an emergency, which I am happy to report has not happened.

While there is good news on the growth of the business there is also some sad news. We have lost several much loved and greatly missed pets of clients this year and so we say a sad and final good bye to Toby, Chrissy, Mac, Fred, Bart, Max and Bunny. God speed to you all!

2012 will bring many new challenges, new clients and new service requests ... all of which I am looking forward to. I wish everyone (pets and humans) the very best this holiday season and may the new year bring health, wealth and happiness ... and some fun too!

Puppy Socialization & Classes: Risks vs Benefits

Lately I have noticed (what I feel is very strange behaviour) new puppy owners carrying their puppies in their arms while they walk around the neighbourhood. Very odd indeed. Perhaps a well intentioned veterinarian told these puppy newbies that if their puppy touched the ground they would get sick and die. I certainly hope not...but you never know these days. This very strange and commonly occurring behaviour has prompted me to do a little research into this with the hopes that there was some kind of intelligent answer. And, I think what may have happened is that these puppy newbies took the advice a little too far!

There is always concern that puppies will get sick and the threat of Parvovirus is very real but according to my understanding and interpretation of a recent article from Veterinary Medicine that while it is important to vaccinate your puppy it is equally important to socialize them and get them into a proper structured puppy class (if you lack the time and discipline to follow your own socialization plan for your puppy). There is a critical time period where puppies must be socialized and it ends, according to the experts, at around 16 weeks. Puppy classes help with both socialization, bite inhibition, and leash manners, etc. Studies indicate that these early classes go a long way to bond the puppy to its new owner. Often times, when puppies grow out of their cute puppy stage and into the trying adolescence stage they are either dumped at shelters, abandoned at the park or side of the road or relegated to the garage (or worse). Yes, I have seen it over and over again. Without proper socialization, puppies have the potential to grow into aggressive dogs on the road to euthanization. If you don't believe me hit the websites for the ASPCA and the BCSPCA and do some of your own research.

If you are worried that your puppy may pick up Parvovirus at puppy class or while socializing - there are excellent vaccines available so talk to your veterinarian. Although, some puppies (about 8%) do fail to generate enough protection with two vaccines and they need their final one around 14 to 16 weeks of age.

To minimize this risk, ask your puppy class organizer what their vaccine policy is. At a minimum there should be one vaccine or even better two. Do the first vaccine at seven weeks and the second at nine. Ask the organizer how they keep the floor clean - do they use a special bleach solution to clean up feces and prevent contamination. They should never allow a sick puppy in class and should pay attention to all the puppies and send anyone home with a sick puppy. Puppies can be carried from the car to the class (if you are worried and depending on where they are in their vaccine protocol). And, no this is not the same as carrying your puppy on an outing - that is ridiculous and will only cause your puppy to grow into a fearful dog.

Again, according to Veterinary Medicine, puppies benefit from early socialization from puppy classes (or do like I did with Madeline my own dog and make your own socialization plan using advice from Dr. Ian Dunbar's many puppy books). The benefit outweighs the risk of infectious diseases so long as basic precautions are taken. It is far more likely that a puppy will die from behaviour issues due to lack of proper socialization than from an infection picked up at puppy classes or from walking around your neighbourhood.

So all those people carrying their puppies - put them down and take them for a real walk. And, remember always do your own research, there are some excellent veterinarians around (and some who are not) who can help, great websites (Dr. Ian Dunbar) and solid reading materials available at your fingertips so do right by your puppy and get yourself informed. Don't take my opinion - form your own with expert assistance and guidance. Your puppy will thank you!

Jimmy Fallon of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon

One of my favourite ways to unwind after a busy day is to catch Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Besides Jimmy's great band the Roots, he has great guests (musical and otherwise), is really seriously funny and seems like an all around really nice guy. One of the things he routinely does on his show Late Night with Jimmy Fallon is his Thank You Notes Segment. If you have ever watched his show you will know how funny these thank you notes are. I think Jimmy uses these thank you notes as a way to release - but of course I have no idea why he does them. On my blog today, I thought I would honour Jimmy Fallon and his Thank You Notes by writing my own. And, well they won't be near as funny (or even close) as Jimmy's - they are funny to me and go a long way in releasing some frustration I have for the everyday things I come up against. I hope my thank you notes at least give you a giggle or two.

Thank You Notes:

1. Thank you...to the blond woman at Dogwood Park who did nothing to control her Rottweiler while he grabbed and bit my leg.

2. Thank you...to the people who leave dog poop for others to step in.

3. Thank you...to the woman with the Boxer who yelled, "he's really aggressive" while he charged me and the dog I was walking.

4. Thank you...to the neighbour who lets their cat poop in my garden everyday.

5. Thank you...to the woman at the park at 154th and 17th area with the pink sweater-clad barking out-of-control schnauzer who will not put it on a leash or try to call her dog while it is taunting the 90lb dog I am walking.

6. Thank you...to the drivers who dangerously tailgate my car (when it is obviously full of live cargo).

Adorable Boston Terrier and French Bulldog Cross Needs Home!

Yogi is 2 year old Boston Terrier / French Bulldog cross. She is healthy, affectionate, and playful. She is obedient, loves to walk, and also enjoys lounging at home in front of the fireplace. Yogi needs to be re-homed as she is not good with other dogs, or young children. She can be very aggressive with other dogs, especially when out on a walk, though she is fine with some dogs and very playful. Yogi is currently in a home with a young child, and a cat. She does well at home and is loved, but the family gets anxious when other children are in the home. She can growl at kids, and has snapped at kids in the past. Between her dog aggression and her growling / snapping at kids she would be better suited to a home where there would be no younger children. She may do fine in a home with another dog - depending on the other dog and how they get along. She needs a firm hand when out on a walk, ands someone who can handle her potential aggression if approached by other dogs who may be off-leash. Yogi walks well on leash, and problems usually occur when she is approached by off-leash dogs. She would make a great pet for the right home with experienced owners who are up for a challenging but loving dog.

Happy Halloween from all of us!

There are some scary Halloween dangers for your dog that you need to watch out for, they are:

1) Halloween candy can be toxic to your dog. Don’t let your dog eat Halloween candy. Chocolate is toxic to dogs and tin foil and cellophane wrappers can be hazardous if swallowed. Seal your child’s stash and keep out of reach.

2) Be careful with candles near your dog! Sometimes a stray tail can knock over a candle-lit pumpkin leading to a fire. Consider using a no flame, no mess alternative to light up your jack-o-lantern.

3) Wires and cords could harm your dog. Make sure to safely secure all wires and cords from decorative lights and props. Chewing on cords could cause cuts, burns or possibly life-threatening electrical shock.

4) Door bells can be scary for your dog. All but the most social dogs should be kept away from the front door during peak trick-or-treat hours. All those strangers repeatedly ringing the bell can be very scary and stressful.

5) Keep your dog’s ID on! Sometimes accidents happen and while you are frequently opening the door for trick-or-treaters your pup may make a run for it. The proper identification can be a lifesaver.

It was raining cats and dogs today in South Surrey - so to keep my spirits up (while I was drenched) I took these pictures with my little water resistant camera.

Once I got home and got everyone dried off and settled on their beds in front of the fireplace I made myself a nice cup of hot chocolate and then I uploaded my pictures and to my surprise they showed how beautiful and simple nature can be - even in the driving wind and rain.

This Thanksgiving I am most grateful for: my health, my warm and cozy home, my supportive husband, my beloved dogs, my rewarding business and generous clients, a recent reconciliation with my sister, friendships both new and old, my quiet and lovely neighbourhood. AND, most important I am simply just grateful for my life and how rich it is. This is not to say my life is always easy - life never is but I am, however, grateful just the same.

Take your Dog to Whistler for some Great Hiking!

Hiking, sniffing, chasing, playing, eating....sleeping at the Four Seasons (Priceless)

I spent this past Labour Day weekend in Whistler with my husband, my beloved Doberman Pinscher Madeline and one of my very special dog clients. During the day we spent hiking the many trails of the Whistler area and I have to say it was both a memorable and wonderful experience for both humans and canines. I had long since written Whistler off as it had become both notorious for price gouging and being a little rundown, however, upon my return to Whistler I was pleasantly surprised that it had been returned to its old glory and was offering great deals on mini-getaways. We stayed at the Four Seasons at Whistler and we had an amazing time. I know what you are thinking Four Seasons...very expensive. Yes, it can be but if you watch their website they often have great deals going on, which they had this past Labour Day weekend. Most importantly about the Four Seasons at Whistler is that they are very dog friendly, they provide beds, treats, bowls and even bottled water for dog guests. Best of all they do not charge any extra for your dog. So we brought two dogs along and it did not cost any extra. Fantastic! One of the things I loved early in the morning was getting up with the dogs and taking them out for their morning potty break. The weather was cool and no one was around except for the friendly and helpful doorman. After the dogs had finished their business I helped myself to the wonderful complimentary coffee provided in the Four Seasons' lobby and just hung out and read the paper, sipped my coffee while both dogs just relaxed. While I do not have any exciting pictures of my trip, as you can see, I do have a picture of two very tired and content dogs relaxing in their suite at the Four Seasons - they had hiked all day, sniffed all kinds of animal scat, chased bugs, played and ate. Pretty lucky dogs I would say. I have provided some links that you may find helpful, if you are planning a trip to Whistler. I highly recommend it and your dog will love it!

Retrain Yourself to Restrain your Dog!

The other day while I was out driving to an appointment, I noted a large number of drivers who had little dogs sitting in their laps while they were driving. Some of these dogs were even partially hanging out of the driver's window. While this looks cute to some and is great fun for the dog it is, however, really dangerous for the dog.

Most dogs love to ride in the car looking at all the sights on the way to the park or the beach and anticipating all the fun they are going to have. It does not matter where you and your beloved dog are going - it is up to you to ensure they arrive there safely.

In a collision, an unrestrained dog can act like a missile exerting a force of up to 20 times its actual weight - with the potential to injure passengers as well as itself. According to Police Traffic Service "The worst place for dogs is in the front seat of the car,". A dog will sit with his head far closer to the dashboard than any human passenger. And, airbags which are designed with adult human passengers in mind, if you do not know this, deploy at speeds up to 200 MPH and do not fully inflate until they are at least 12 inches from the dash. The impact from an airbag that has not fully inflated can cause serious or fatal injuries to dogs.

So be sure to always restrain yourself and your dog from being tossed around during a collision, a sudden stop or a sharp turn. Restraining your dog will keep him safe by preventing him from escaping and or interfering with first responders should you be in an accident. Imagine, if you would, you have an accident and your dog is tossed out of the window and he is lucky enough to survive the collision but he is now frightened to death while he is loose on the side of the road or in the middle of an intersection.

So remember, if you love your dog keep him safe. And, the safest way for him to travel is strapped into a harness in the back seat or secure in a crate in the cargo area of your car.

I have just returned from 10 wonderfully relaxing days on the island of Maui. And, I am rested and ready to head into one of the busiest times of the year for pet service professionals - the summertime. Anyways, I wanted to share with you some of the sights I captured on my camera of the beautiful island of Maui, including some of its birds, a beach dog fishing, a cat, glorious beaches, and flowers. In addition to sharing some of my pictures of Maui, I also wanted to give a special 'shout out' to the Maui Humane Society. In the last seven years, the Maui Humane Society has placed more than 13,000 lost or abandoned pets into loving homes. They are a private, not-for-profit agency, and they depend on donations, of any kind large or small. You can help them save lives of the pets on Maui. This very special month of June is Adopt-a-cat Month at the Maui Humane Society. This is a special program where folks with qualified homes can adopt a beautiful cat. These cats are available to take a nap with, be your best friend or how about an alarm clock (all you cat people know that cats make great alarm clocks)! If you are planning a trip to Maui, check out their website at: www.mauihumanesociety.org. They have partnerships with some local restaurants and retailers. Electronic Collars - A Not So Shocking Story

So much has been written and talked about with respect to the electronic collar (also referred to as the remote collar, e-collar and shock collar) and its use on dogs. Not much of this has been positive – in fact I have read very little that has been positive. And, I agree that the electronic collar can be used to provide pain and punishment to some dogs as with anything it can be abused when placed in the wrong hands.

Let me share with you my own very personal experience with the electronic collar. I have a male Doberman and his name is Roman (pictured above wearing his e-collar). I purchased him about three years ago as a return from the breeder. While he is a magnificent looking dog – he came with enough baggage for ten dogs – he was like a fast moving train about to be derailed. In addition to his lack of walking skills, he did not know sit, down, come, his name….well you get the picture. Since he arrived, he had been too much for me to handle, I tried to walk him on a choke chain (that quickly cut his neck which is about the size of a medium-sized tree trunk), next I tried a prong collar (that made his neck bleed and they just kept breaking) the martingale and harness were also tried and as you can guess these tools failed miserably. I tried treats and really every possible tool and training technique I knew of. Then I simply threw up my arms and said I won’t be walking him. Sure I tried trainer after trainer. Some trainers were helpful and some progress was made – another trainer wanted him on a gentle leader (you know how that went). This same trainer told me all Roman needed was a really good treat to get him to listen - she called it "the million dollar treat" you guessed it...more money down the drain. Over time, Roman continued to improve as my husband worked with him religiously – but the improvement was very slow and only slightly measurable.

Then a friend suggested the electronic collar and showed my husband how to use it – from there Roman got worse. This was because he did not know how to use the collar and was using it more as a punishment tool, as our friend instructed. This method only escalated Roman’s behaviour – which by this time could only be described as brutal.

Then we went away for a weekend and we took Roman and our other Doberman Madeline along. That weekend Roman ate a bird, nearly killed a cat and tried to go after a horse. We were beside ourselves. I cried alot and my husband and I blamed each other for Roman's behaviour. Even our friends said we must have made him this way. When we got home we contacted yet another trainer who was recommended to us and who worked with special cases and the electronic collar. My husband worked with this trainer and Roman for several months and there was some decent progress. Roman could now attend group classes and he was less unruly. But the progress quickly stalled as we reached a plateau and we still had not achieved any decent walking skills and I still was not able to handle or walk Roman as he still pulled and lunged like bull and his anxiety was still extremely high. I could not even take him to the vet as I could not control him at all. Then we made a decision to just take him out a couple times a week and that he would mostly just be a house dog. Desperate people we were and we were making a desperate decision. I know this is crazy but walking a screeching, barking, shaking, terrified 85 pound Doberman was becoming a chore – the neighbours feared him and the most common thing people said to me was “will he eat us?”. While I was sure he wouldn’t - BUT if he wanted to eat something – I could not stop him. No one could!

Then by chance through my own business, Signature Pet Services, I met Jill Sharp at Life Without a Leash. She had been recommended to me by local dog expert Joan Klucha to help some of my clients – so I contacted Jill so that I could meet her and watch one of her training sessions for my clients’ benefit – not my own. I had no intention of getting another trainer for Roman – we’d already had three so far. I met Jill at her training centre and watched her interact with a woman and her dog and as I watched Jill I saw she had an amazing and very quick connection with the dog and seemed to tune into him immediately. Her instructions to the woman handling the dog were simple to follow. So….I got to thinking….could Jill help Roman get back on his leash and out in the world? Could Roman one day be a well behaved dog like my other Doberman Madeline?

I booked a private session with Jill and she taught me how to use the electronic collar and to properly handle Roman. I had very little previous experience with the electronic collar and did not even know how to turn it on. So I had my lesson with Jill and she gave me some simple homework to do with Roman. The next day I took Roman out into my cul-de-sac and began putting my homework into place….low and behold I was getting good results and fast too! I was in shock (no pun intended) and could not believe it.

I continued to do the homework everyday and I had two more private sessions with Jill and also attended one group class. That was almost a year ago and I am still doing my homework regularly with Roman – but the coolest thing is that I AM WALKING ROMAN AND HE IS REALLY GOOD ON THE LEASH. He always wears the electronic collar and a flat leather collar on our walks – he is more relaxed, happy, responsive and well behaved. I am 100% in control of him at all times. Now the neighbours say things like “Wow, he walks so nicely on a leash”, “Your dog is so well behaved”, and the best one is….”Did you get a new dog?”.

In some ways Jill Sharp and her training methods have given me a new dog – a new and improved Roman. Roman sometimes wears his electronic collar around the house and while he was always really good in the house – he is now amazing. And, if you think Roman wearing the collar in the house is a bit much – the minute I touch Roman’s electronic collar he comes running to me and sits and waits for me to put it on. I know it is not just because he thinks he’s going out – he is actually comforted by it. Because he knows there is no more yelling or collar yanking corrections should he step out of line. He simply gets a command with a tap on the collar and that is it….all done he does what is asked.

At our home, the electronic collar is never ever used as a punishment tool!

A great big thank you to Jill Sharp for making Roman a better dog, a happier and more relaxed dog, and a dog I can handle and walk…but most importantly the bond between Roman and me (that was not very good before I met Jill) is incredible. And, the love I feel for Roman is now the same as the love I feel for Madeline, my other Doberman. My family is lucky and very grateful to have had Jill Sharp come into our lives.

While it may seem corny to some, I thought it would be a good idea (and in the interest of rabbits and bunnies everywhere) to blog about the IMPORTANCE OF NOT GIVING YOUR CHILD a live rabbit or bunny this Easter holiday. Instead, may I suggest your child volunteer at one of the many of the shelters who rescue and rehabilitate these delightful and personality filled animals. If volunteering is out of the question - simply because your child does not have the time then clearly your child does not have the time to care for a living breathing rabbit or bunny. So, in the alternative, you could make a small (or really big) donation and place the donation confirmation in your child's Easter basket to at least provide him or her with some awareness of the plight of rabbits and bunnies who are abandoned everyday by people who no longer want to care for these animals. If you are looking for great organizations to start with then go to Vancouver Rabbit Rescue & Advocacy first. They have a great website and lots of information about rabbits and bunnies who need loving homes. They also have lots of helpful and interesting general information about rabbits and bunnies. We say a sad farewell to a most Beloved Bart

This blog is dedicated to Bart who recently passed on and will be very sadly missed by all - he is the cute little dog in the middle between Madeline and Roman. In fact, after Bart's first stay with me (he was so good with the big dogs) he became an honourary Doberman Pinscher. This is a title that very few small dogs ever achieve - but Bart was extra special and I will always remember him for his huge personality. This was one small dog who did not know what 'small dog syndrome' was. Right on Bart!

If it should be that I grow frail and weak

Signature Pet Services - In-Home-Boarding Program FAQ

What kind of dog is best suited for Signature Pet Services' in-home-boarding program?

Honestly, a dog that has not been humanized. What this means is a dog who lives in a home where its owners are in charge rather than the dog being in charge. In other words....

The dog is not permitted on the furniture in the home.
The dog receives regular on-leash exercise.
The dog has its own bed or crate to sleep in and does not sleep in the owner's bed.
The dog is neither a grazer or a free-feeder, simply put the dog has an established feeding routine and its owner decides when it is fed - not the other way around.
The dog must get along with all dogs (small and large).
The dog must respect humans and show no aggression.
The dog must be able to accept discipline (this does not mean I spank the dog or hit him) this means that if the dog is not behaving or is not listening then I must administer a correction. For some dogs (most really) this may mean being told to lay down or to go to their bed. I have had dogs stay with me that when I took their ball away that they were guarding they spent the rest of their day sulking and acting like a child instead of a dog. Some folks have humanized their dog so much that the dog cannot handle being told what to do because at home the dog runs the house not the human.

When dog owners are looking for a place for their dog to board while they are away they frequently ask the same questions about my in-home-boarding program, so with that in mind, I have published the questions I am repeatedly asked. I hope you will find this information helpful!

1. My dog sleeps in my bed at home - can he sleep with you? You would be surprised how often I am asked this question, in fact, it is the top question I am asked. The answer, is no.

2. My dog has separation anxiety and cannot be alone - can he stay with you? The answer, is no. The reason I say no is that this type of dog is very disruptive to my own pack and household, as well as other boarders. It is simply not fair to my own dogs and other clients' dogs to have them stressed out or placed in an unsafe situation by a dog that cannot handle being separated from its owner. I recently boarded a dog who the owner promised me (and attested to in writing) had no behaviour or separation anxiety issues. The first day the dog showed aggression towards me and my own dogs and tried to bust out of my home through the windows. As soon as he started to destroy my home I called the owner overseas and told them they needed to have someone come and pick up their dog or I would remove it to a kennel. So a word of caution, do not lie about your dog's shortcomings as it will not serve you and you will very quickly find your dog will be removed from my home without any hesitation.

3. I need to board my little dog with you - but she does not like big dogs, is that OK? No, it is not OK nor is it acceptable for your dog not to get along with other dogs. I will only accept dogs that get along with all sizes of dogs. Some of my best boarders are actually small dogs (way to go Kimber! - pictured above) that get along great with my own two dogs Roman and Madeline. Keep in mind that no dogs are left unsupervised with either my own dogs or other boarding dogs as dog behaviour can never ever be predicted. Small dogs can very quickly ignite the prey drive in larger dogs so the utmost care is always taken with small dogs.

4. My dog has aggression - can he still stay with you? Generally, the answer to this question is no, however, sometimes people really need help and they need to get away for a couple of days and they have no where else to turn. There are some situations where I will take a dog with aggression (so long as it is dog aggression and not people aggression). I simply keep the dog segregated from my own dogs and will never board an aggressive dog when I have other dogs boarding. If the dog is to be walked, he will wear a muzzle. The dog will have a very rigid routine and these types of dogs in the end never end up causing any trouble because the owners have been honest and have properly prepared me and I have implemented all of my safety measures. I will add that I have a perfect safety record. So again, a word of caution, be honest about your dog!

5. Can my dog come over and play with your dogs before I board?

There is the rare occasion that a potential boarding dog can meet Roman and Madeline prior to boarding but this is not the norm. But this introduction does not include play. Sometimes a walk can be arranged but it all depends on the boarding dog and how dog savvy the owner is. Madeline (my female Doberman) was bitten in the face during this situation and I no longer permit it.

6. Can I come over to your house and see what it looks like before I decide to board? Sorry, I have had an incident occur that no longer permits me to allow strangers into my home for this purpose. If you are interested in boarding your dog with me I now come to your home to see how your dog lives and how he acts in his own environment. If I decide your dog is suitable to stay in my home (not all dogs or their owners are suitable to become a Signature Pet client) then we go over the paperwork and then at this time (and only at this time) will I permit the scheduling of a home inspection. There is no exception to this rule - so don't ask for one.

7. I am going away for the weekend, can I drop my dog off tonight? Not likely, as I am very particular about the dogs I accept into my in-home-boarding program and therefore both the dog and the owner are very carefully pre-screened and this is done through a previous appointment. I am not a boarding kennel but a home-based private boarding service and I book up very quickly. At this time, I am actually not accepting new boarders but hope to open this up again soon!

8. I don't vaccinate my dog is that a problem? All dogs considered for in-home-boarding must present a current Vaccination Certificate as part of the qualification process.

9. Can I come into your home when I drop my dog off as I want make sure she is settled into your home before I leave? Under no circumstances does the dog enter my home with its owner. Typically, I pick up the dog at the owner's home or I meet the owner outside my home in my driveway and I take the dog for a walk to establish the new (albeit temporary) leadership before the dog enters my home. This is my business strategy and it has made for a highly successful and safe boarding program.

10. My dog is barker - is this a problem? I do not accept dogs that have any barking issues as I am very respectful of my neighbours and their right to peaceful living. If your dog barks at a squirrel or when the doorbell rings that is fine - but any other type of barking behaviour is not accepted in my in-home-boarding program.

Please read the following message from Cheryl at Vancouver Shar Pei Rescue:

Vancouver Shar Pei rescue is looking for help from dog lovers who might be flying home from LAX. We've helped save two dogs so far and want to continue helping. The LA shelter system is brutal and the City and County shelters in LA make our shelters look like the Hilton. Two Shar Pei puppies under six months have died in shelters within a month. The local rescue is swamped and is carrying 26 dogs and paying for kennel space for many of them.

We've lightened the load by bringing up two dogs so far, both quickly adopted, and are trying to be a regular help, provided any local dogs in need are also getting care first. Our local Shar Peis have the luxury of two rescues and fairly decent shelter care. When we take dogs out of LA shelters, it means that another dog may not be killed to make space.

If you are flying through LAX, please help us help dogs. All we need is for you to book a kennel space on the plane and we will pay for it and make everything else as easy as possible. Or, if you are planning to fly through LAX in the near future, please contact Vancouver Shar Pei rescue for a simple way to help save a life.

Senior Rottweiler has just lost her beloved owner...Can you help?

This poor senior female Rottweiler finds herself in a shelter at the age of 11. This dog and her beloved owner were homeless and living in a truck but the owner had to go to the hospital. West Coast Rottweiler Rescue wants so desperately to find this poor girl a safe haven. She may have a couple of years or she may not last long. There is simply no way of knowing.

West Coast Rottweiler Rescue says that this sweet dog is confused and deserves so much better. It appears that she can live with other animals but is best suited in a home that is quiet with few stairs.

THINKING ABOUT BUYING A PUPPY?

Thinking about buying a puppy?

Pet stores cater to impulsive buyers and consumers seeking convenient transactions. These stores don't interview prospective buyers to ensure responsible, lifelong homes for the pets they sell, and the stores may be staffed by employees with limited knowledge about pets and pet care.

Many disreputable "breeders" sell their dogs directly to the public over the Internet and through newspaper ads. They often sell several breeds of dogs, but may advertise each breed in a separate place and not in one large advertisement or website. These breeders are not required to be inspected by any federal agency and, in many cases, are not inspected at all.

Reputable breeders care where their puppies go and interview hopeful adopters. They don't ever sell through pet stores or to families they have not thoroughly checked out.

Purebred papers do not guarantee the quality of the breeder or the dog. Even the American Kennel Club (AKC) or Canadian Kennel Club (CKC) admit that they cannot guarantee the quality or health of dogs in their registry.

Puppy mill puppies often have medical problems. These problems can lead to veterinary bills in the thousands of dollars. But pet retailers count on the bond between families and their new puppies being so strong that the puppies will not returned. And guarantees are often so difficult to comply with that they are virtually useless. In addition, poor breeding and socialization practices at many puppy mills can lead to behavioural problems throughout the puppies' lives. This cute new puppy will soon become your family's worst nightmare.

Please don't buy from a pet store, and be very wary of websites and newspaper ads. Above all, never ever buy a dog if you cannot physically visit every area of the home or breeding facility where the dogs are kept. Puppy mills will continue to operate until people stop buying their puppies and dogs.

And one more thing....if you are too busy to find the puppy you want locally and/or you are too busy to drive/fly to where the puppy is than let me give you this little bit of advice: you are too busy to properly raise this puppy and you should re-consider dog ownership as the commitment of both time and money is staggering. Try going to a shelter and volunteering to walk all the dogs that well-meaning (but perhaps ignorant) people abandoned because they did not take the time to socialize and train their puppy.

There are lots of magazine articles, articles on the Internet and good books on how to select the right breed of puppy for your lifestyle and how to find a good breeder. Cesar Millan has a great paperback book out entitled How to Raise the Perfect Dog. This book covers breeders and how to select them (among other really helpful things). I highly recommend this book to anyone who is considering a puppy or who has a new puppy!

DOG-SAFE GARDENING TIPS

This blog is inspired by all the early gardeners I met last week in Ocean Park who were already beautifying their (already beautiful) gardens for spring.

If you have a dog or you are getting a dog (or you just care about the planet) here are some dog-safe gardening ideas:

Garden organically (this goes without saying).

Raised beds will protect your gardens from scampering paws and rooting noses.

Digging pit make an area where your dog is allowed to dig without disrupting your beautiful garden.

Leave a plant-free patrolling area of your yard as dogs by instinct will patrol fence lines and cruise boundaries.

Be very careful with the nightshade family of plants (i.e.: tomatoes, potatoes, and eggplant) as they contain alkaloids that are dangerous to dogs and even fatal.

Avoid cocoa bean mulches and composts and even check your store purchased manure for cocoa bean content as the cocoa bean contains theobromine which is toxic to dogs.

Grape vines avoid these all together as grapes are toxic to dogs. If you really want to see grapevines make a quick trip to many of the great local wineries in our very own Fraser Valley.

Walnut or Almond trees both produce nuts with tannin and this is yet another toxin for dogs.

Don't like snails (who does) but please DO NOT poison them with snail bait as the bait contains the highly toxic metaldehyde. You could try copper barrier tape or do as I do and live with them. Besides they make great snacks for the birds.

Stay warm this week and plan to prepare your plants for the cold snap we are expected to have later this week!

Madeline by my Side

Madeline (a beautiful black and rust purebred Doberman Pinscher) is a near-perfect dog and if there is a god I thank him everyday for her. Madeline came to my husband and I on a very hot humid August long weekend in 2005. We drove to Oregon in the US to pick her up – she was just a tiny puppy. In fact, Madeline was the tiniest puppy of her litter. We don’t like to call her the runt – but she was in fact the runt. But she was a friendly, bright and outgoing puppy who seemed to have the very best temperament of all the puppies in her litter – which is very important in a Doberman Pinscher. She was assessed by a group of experienced Doberman breeders from both the US and Canada and she was the pick of the litter. Lucky for us she was small and that is why we were able to purchase her as she was not going to be a top show dog in the US.

Madeline and I have been through a lot together. At first, our personalities really clashed (just ask my husband) but slowly she began to trust me and I her. Today, the love I feel for her is very strong and yes some days when she is on the naughty list not so much and vice versa for her I am sure.

She has been with me through thick and thin. She was there the morning I was struck down in a cross walk on my way to catch my bus to work in the city. In fact, she was nearly struck too. You see my husband had her leashed and in front of me in the crosswalk and when some woman struck me and tossed me up onto her hood and kept driving … she just missed Madeline. That day I thought I was going to die – I even saw bright lights – some say I had a near-death experience. Once I was tossed off the moving vehicle and dragged myself to the curb it was Madeline who came to me and I hugged and clung to while I sat in shock awaiting my husband to call the emergency crews. It took along time for my memories to gel from that day but I do remember the firefighters at the scene asking me “was she friendly?” as I was literally hanging onto her for dear life.

Madeline was also there for me in my previous career highs and my lows. She was there for the disappointments with friends and decisions I made. She was there for my all triumphs…all my losses. Always listening – never giving advice. In fact, Madeline is the inspiration for my Signature Pet Services' logo as that is her actual silhouette in my logo. What a dog!

I can and do take Madeline with me everywhere. She is good in big cities, five-star hotels, elevators, airports, cars, the bus (yes, once my old bus driver picked her and I up and drove us home) and with people and all animals (including wildlife). One day while we were out, Madeline alerted me to a dying Canada Goose who must have been nesting (as all her eggs were crushed) when a loader stacked several pallets of stone against her, pinning her and her nest of eggs against a chain-link fence. She had been there so long she was so faded that she was the colour of the stone (tan and grey) and she'd been obviously attacked by several predators too! Poor girl and she could do nothing but sit there. We quickly got help for the goose and the owners of the construction yard moved the stones and pallets away so she could be helped and taken to a bird rehabilitation centre. That goose has Madeline to thank for saving her life!

Madeline is fun, super smart, friendly, athletic, aloof, calm, quiet, brave, powerful, sensitive, obedient and a diva all rolled up into one stunningly beautiful dog. I like to say that if she was a human, she'd be a black-belt karate expert (ha-ha)!

I treat Madeline like a dog – because she is one and that is why she is so happy, content and so special. I do not give her baby names or talk to her in a baby-voice. She is not allowed on the furniture, to eat from/at the table or anything else human-like. She is walked almost everyday, goes to obedience class, has the occasional job of a TV production, goes to the dog park and loves to play at the beach.

Meet Lucy - A Most Beautiful Bloodhound Looking for her Forever Home!

Lucy is a 4-year old bloodhound. She has wrinkles! Lucy was pulled from her home where she received no exercise, and the humans she lived with did not have basic understanding about dog behaviour. They claimed that she never bonded with them and suffered from fear anxiety which finally led to her losing her home this month. Lucy had been moved around already in her short life, originally she was bred in the US, and now she has nowhere to go. She is currently being fostered and her temporary foster parents are looking for a suitable home for her.

Cheryl (one of her two foster parents) says that she could not be more impressed with Lucy. Read what Cheryl says about Lucy:

She's responded so beautifully to rules our boundaries and limitations, loves her walks and sleeps the rest of the time, and her anxiety is very minor. Lucy is obedient to us, submissive to our much smaller dogs and non reactive to dogs she meets in the forest and on walks. She is house trained, sleeps through the night and knows her place. Lucy has earned privileges very quickly and her crate is now open all the time, including overnight. She has bonded with all of us and really wants to play with our dogs, and she play-bows like a puppy at them. We have no doubt that Lucy's problems in her previous home were caused by human mismanagement, what else in new, and that in a home that subscribes to Cesar's way of dealing with dogs, she'll be very good and happy.

As good a fit as she is, we are unable to keep her here other than as a foster. As a rescue, we really need to hold that foster spot for the next Lucy. We want Lucy to find a great home, no kids, possibly with another dog, and with very dog savvy people. Lucy needs a home where her new owners will make her feel secure by being her alpha and will give her the exercise that every dog needs. Well placed in a dog savvy home, this is a wonderful dog. She typifies how simply changing the home and offering structure, leadership, rules and exercise can transform an unstable dog into a gentle companion.

Here is an Interesting Fact about Doberman Pinschers

One of the more interesting aspects of Doberman Pinscher history, was the use of this great breed during war times. Dobermans are known for their protective guarding abilities but because of their intelligence and easy trainability they were also found useful for service in the military.

Dobermans were used in both WWI and WWII assisting soldiers. These war dogs were trained to find and rescue wounded soldiers, detect enemy locations and mines, act as messengers, sentries and guard dogs. On another note, there is mention that dogs were also used in the war as “suicide dogs”. These dog victims of war were packed with explosives that were remotely detonated once the dog was near an enemy tank. This definitely shows the cruelty, wastefulness and sadness of war.

In WWII the U.S. Marine Corps had their own K-9 Corps known as the “Devil’s Dogs”. (Not the most flattering name for a heroic group of dogs). These dogs received specialized training as messenger dogs to deliver messages, ammunition or medical supplies and sentry dog training to alert handlers of any enemy strangers approaching. These dogs prevented many ambushes as they stood watch protecting their sleeping, tired soldier handlers. Of these Marine War Dogs, 25 died in 1944 at the Battle of Guam.

If you are interested in reading more about dogs during wartime there are plenty of web sites out there, just google "Marine Dog Platoon" for some very interesting history.

In honour of these dogs a memorial was created on the island of Guam in the South Pacific. Fourteen dogs were killed in action and others died from exhaustion, tropical illness, heat stroke, accidents, and anemia from hookworm. All were buried in Guam in what is now the first war dog memorial (created by former 1st Lt. William W. Putney, who was the veterinarian for the dogs on Guam). A beautiful life-size bronze statue, “Always Faithful” was created by Susan Bahary and is shown below.

Happy New Year from everyone at Signature Pet Services!

Here are some suggestions to get your new year off to the right start for you and your dog.

Walk your dog more - he needs at a minimum a walk of 30 minutes but optimum is 60 minutes everyday. Not enough time ... then hire a professional dog walker to help out one or two times a week. Make sure they are experienced and insured.

Feed less treats from the pet supply store and feed more fresh veggies (no onions though).

Research dog foods to ensure your dog is receiving the very best food - remember not all dog food is created equally. Some of my favourite dog foods out there right now are: NRG, California Natural, Taste of the Wild, and First Mate (my personal choice for my dogs' specific needs).

Volunteer at a shelter (it does not always need to be the BCSPCA) there are lots of good organizations out there that really need your help and if you cannot afford your time - then perhaps you can afford a few dollars a month or a small donation up front. Every little bit helps these (usually) cash strapped organizations.

Adopt/Rescue a dog or puppy - but do your homework first. These dogs often come with pre-existing issues, so make sure you know what they are and if you can handle them.

Take a class with your puppy or dog.

Does your dog or puppy run your life? If so, that is not normal so hire a trainer to help you out - it may only take one or two sessions to set things right.

Get yourself a great dog book and promise to read it by the end of January. Just head to the animal or pet section of your favorite local or online book store for books on everything from training, fiction, non-fiction and reference guides.

A HUGE THANK YOU you to all my clients and their dogs for enriching both my life and the lives of my beloved dogs Roman and Madeline. What joy!

This has been a truly amazing and successful year - one that I never imagined could have happened. There have been ups and downs, but mostly ups and the downs brought with them incredible learning opportunities that have helped me to get closer to my goal of becoming one of the finest dog service providers in the South Surrey and White Rock areas.

I look forward to the challenges of the new year and I will see you all in 2011.

PUPPIES ARE FREEZING TO DEATH IN ALBERTA - CAN YOU HELP?

There is no picture today as this is a very sad and heart wrenching reality that will break your heart.

I have posted today's blog on behalf of Rachel of the Edmonton, Alberta rescue group called Rescue for Life.

Rescue for Life has a major issue on the Alberta reserve they work on. This issue being that the puppies being born in the cold Alberta winter (it was -35 a couple weeks ago) are LITERALLY FREEZNG TO DEATH. Rescue for Life desperately needs foster homes for adult dogs and puppies. They just rescued one lone 4-week old puppy today that again was half frozen. All eight of her little sibling were frozen to death. She is just two pounds and cannot yet even see or hear. She will break your heart!

There are FIVE 8-week old puppies struggling to live. And, EIGHT 3-week old puppies struggling to live. And, there is one struggling mother dog who is pregnant again and desperately trying to feed all of these puppies. There is very limited food and shelter for this family. They are all outdoors and will not make it. The mother dog is just a puppy herself. This is ALL just at one home and all the homes have this problem. Plus, there are about 4 other adult dogs on the property.

If you know of any rescue groups who have room for these puppies, Rescue for life will transport them out to you (and will vaccinate and de-worm them before coming).

Sadly, all the Alberta rescues are packed full and it is so cold out tonight that all the dogs and puppies are just not moving right now. Imagine how cold they are and how much they are suffering. Even while I blog about this my eyes are watering and there is a huge lump in my throat

10 CHRISTMAS GIFT IDEAS FOR THE DOG LOVER ON YOUR LIST

DOG BED. Purchase a beautiful dog bed from LL Bean. These beds are beautiful, durable, washable, well priced and last a very long time. LL Bean has great customer service and I have always been able to have my dog beds shipped for free. Their website is http://www.llbean.com/

MAKE UP A CHRISTMAS STOCKING. Items to include in the stocking: dog friendly stuffed toys, Nylabone (this is a great chew bone that can be placed in the dishwasher when it starts looking yucky), Cuz toy, NRG Smoked Salmon treats, Greenies (my clients swear by them), Kongs (come in all sizes and are irresistible when stuffed with cookies or peanut butter). A great way to keep the young pups busy in their crates during the holiday time is to make up some frozen Kongs the night before. I take several Kongs and plug up the little end with peanut butter and then freeze them. Then I make up some organic beef or chicken consume and put some into the Kong and then leave the Kong overnight to freeze. This also works with peanut butter too. If you freeze the Kong it will last much longer and will take puppy much longer to work through. Be careful not to give puppy too much peanut butter or it will upset his tummy. Always remember to supervise any pup or dog with toys, bones, balls etc. to ensure they don't ingest them.

BLANKET. On a budget ... you can purchase lovely fleece material at Laura's Fabrics in White Rock. IKEA in Richmond or Deals World (also in White Rock) always have great inexpensive fleece blankets (under $9) that work well to toss over your dog bed. Fleece washes up well and dries super fast. Although these blankets are not fancy, you can pick up a couple and tie them with a festive ribbon, add a couple dog treats and VOILA you have a practical dog gift under $20.

HAND TOWELS. For that purebred dog owner on your list - go to www.dogstuff.com - where you can search for and purchase 'breed specific' gifts. A lovely idea is the hand towels personalized with your favourite breed. These towels are beautiful and very classy. I gave these to my Doberman friends at Christmas last year - they loved them and so did their company.

DOG CRATE. A collapsible crate - great for those who travel or like to crate their dogs safely in their vehicles. I recommend the brand Canine Camper, these durable crates look like tents and are easy to set up and pack away. However, if your dog is a destructive chewer - this is not the crate to purchase.

GIFT CERTIFICATE. Purchase a gift certificate for obedience classes, grooming, veterinarian or Tisol.

HOME MADE TREATS. Bake your own cookies or muffins and put them in a cool festive tin or box, add a great bow and you are ready to go. There are plenty of fool-proof recipes out there and you can check out my own selection of recipes on my website, http://www.signaturepetservices.ca/.

COLLAR/LEASH. A lovely rolled or braided leather collar and leash, or a plain leather collar with an engraved plate with the dog's name on it, budget conscious or environmentally sensitive - go to www.mesamisonline.com for beautiful hand crafted collars and leashes. They are soft, durable, washable and last a long time. They ship from the Seattle area but only take a few days.

BOOK's, DVD's or MAGAZINE SUBSCRIPTION. There are some great books and DVD's out there - here are three of my favourite dog experts/authors: Cesar Millan, Patricia B. McConnell, and Dr. Ian Dunbar. As for magazine subscriptions - I like Cesar Millan's new magazine and Modern Dog (for fun), but they are all pretty much the same so you can't really go wrong.

PUPPY OR DOG. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD YOU PURCHASE OR ADOPT A PUPPY OR DOG FOR SOMEONE ELSE FOR A CHRISTMAS GIFT. Especially, for children and teens. If you are feeling all warm and fuzzy about puppies and dogs as the holidays near, then I recommend you visit any local shelter to see all the homeless and abandoned dogs that are no longer wanted by their owners. A dog is a living breathing creature and is not disposable as many people seem to think they are. Dogs everywhere are paying with their lives simply because no one wants them anymore. If you want to help a puppy or a dog there are so many shelters out there besides the BCSPCA - all you have to do is get on your computer and google and you will be overwhelmed by the many organizations and homeless dogs that need your help!

Off-Leash Dog Park Etiquette 101

A recent experience at the dog park has prompted me to blog about the subject of off-leash dog parks. Love them or hate them - use them or not please read today's blog, you may find it informative.

The number one rule of the off-leash dog park is - be polite and mind your manners (yes, seriously!)

Cities and municipalities do not have to provide dog owners and professional dog walkers with off-leash dog parks and they can always take them away - so please be respectful of the off-leash dog park at all times. This includes, but is not limited to:

1. Bringing only well socialized dogs to the dog park.

2. Let me try it this way...if your dog is aggressive or reactionary, take him for a leash walk as that is what he needs and find yourself a behaviourist to help with this problem before your dog hurts another dog or a person. The reality is some dogs just have no business being at the off-leash dog park.

3. Always be a responsible dog owner and keep an eye on your dog's behaviour and monitor his body language.

4. Small dog owners pay attention here - do not allow your small dog to go up to a larger dog and behave inappropriately i.e.: standing on their hind legs, barking, snarling and running away. Some dogs see small dogs as prey and may chase them and/or try to catch them. This does not mean the large dog is vicious - it just means he has a high prey drive (which is normal).

5. Bring biodegradable poop bags (if not provided at park).

6. Always pick up your dogs poop.

7. Do not bring small children to the dog park, unless you are prepared to supervise them around the dogs. This also includes removing upset, screaming and crying children from the dog park, if they are afraid of dogs. Do not let them run up to dogs unsupervised then scream and run away - this may attract an unwanted behaviour from the dog. Educate your children at home about dogs, how to greet dogs properly, and that they do not need to be afraid of them. Children must always be supervised around dogs. (Do I need to explain this further?)

8. Do not let your dog bark incessantly as the sound of his bark travels and there are a lot of folks that don't like off-leash dog parks and it just gives them license to complain.

9. AND, if your dog does not have perfect recall or a perfect heel then for the sake of your dog's health and well being, please ensure they travel from your car to the safety of the off-leash dog park on a leash - it just could save their life.

I've come to enjoy the off-leash dog parks but I cannot understand why people let their dogs run up to Madeline (my Doberman) snarl, exhibit deep low growling, show their teeth, or bite her and then they do nothing to correct the dog or apologize for their dog's behaviour. Yes, dogs will be dogs but it is up to the dog's owner to show their dog what is acceptable behaviour and what is not. Clearly, snarling, deep low growling and biting are not acceptable behaviours - at least not in my world.

Did You Know that Nobody Knows Noses like Dogs Know Noses?

We hear and read so much about a dog's nose - it is really quite the amazing thing. You see when a dog sniffs a particular scent the air quickly travels up his nasal cavity and the vapour or odour lodges itself into the mucus and fires off into the dog's scent receptors. Then, there are chemical signals that are sent to the olfactory bulb (this if you don't know and I certainly didn't know is the part of the brain that analyzes smells). Once this occurs, a picture, often referred to as the odour image is then created. The dog sees this image but it is not as a human would see a photograph but a far more sophisticated and detailed image.

A dog's sense of smell has been tested at 10,000 to 100,000 times stronger than a human's nose.

Human noses have 6 million sensory receptor sites, while some dog breeds have receptor sites into the 300 million range. Wow!

A dog's nose is normally cool and moist but sometimes the nose can be warm and dry but this does not necessarily mean the dog is sick.

As our dogs age, some will lose their vision and hearing but their sense of smell will stay with him his entire lifetime.

In really warm temperatures, when a dog pants his ability to get a clear picture of smells is reduced. I have also read that when it is snowing, the same can be said. So it is important when hiking off-leash in new places during either really warm weather or when it is snowing to keep your dog close by or leashed up so that he does not lose his way, if you become separated.

Noses have a unique pattern of ridges and dimples. Along with the shape of the nostril portion of their nose make up a very unique nose print not unlike that of a human's fingerprint.

Any dog owner who is interested in training their dog in nose work should take a tracking class. There are a few good instructors out there and the classes are both fun and interesting. It is actually the dog that does most of the work. With the right dog this can be a very rewarding and fascinating sport, if you don't mind hiking trails and spending time in nature.

What is the purpose of an obedience trial?

The purpose of an obedience trial is to demonstrate the usefulness of the purebred dog as a companion of man and not merely the dog's ability to follow specified routines in the obedience ring. The basic objective of an obedience trial is to produce dogs that have been trained to behave in the home, in public places, and in the presence of other dogs, in a manner that reflects credit on the actual sport of obedience.

Obedience trials are a sport and all participants should be guided by the principles of good sportsmanship both inside and outside the ring. All contestants in a class are required to perform the same exercises in substantially the same way so that the relative quality of the various performances may be compared and scored.

A perfect score is 200 and the team of dog and handler are deducted from that starting point.

My Evening with Cesar Millan THE DOG WHISPERER

Last week I have the pleasure of attending one of Cesar Millan's Dog Whisperer seminars held in Richmond at the River Rock Casino's Theatre. This is a comfortable and intimate venue that holds about 1000 people. I don't think that there is a bad seat in the house. The crowd was polite and enthusiastic - I think as a rule us British Columbians are pretty laid back and polite when it comes to celebrities. I enjoyed the seminar immensely, it did start out a bit 'Hollywood' and Cesar's show is quite 'Americanized' and what I mean by that is he refers to America alot (I mean alot).

The event was part comedy, part show, part rock & roll and part seminar. Cesar did bring various dogs on stage with their owners to demonstrate, essentially owners who had created negative behaviour in their dogs. He also brought a dog on named Boogie but the poor dog got so stage struck he was asked to leave. He also brought onto the stage two service dogs to demonstrate calm assertive behaviour. There was one particular demonstration that really struck a nerve - it was a demonstration of how dogs perceive nervous energy. To do this demonstration Cesar simply played really loud music and showed dogs going crazy on the three large display monitors. Then he demonstrated calm assertive behaviour - simply by having silence. Wow, I must say this point was really driven home to me....so much that I knew I could change some things in my house. That demonstration alone was worth the price of the ticket. Now as you can imagine with having two powerful and high-energy dogs myself and boarding dogs that I do run a very 'tight ship' at my house and everything runs smoothly as it is routine driven, however, I wanted even more calm in the morning when the dogs first wake up, have their morning potty break, and breakfast. (I have chosen not to walk any dogs before breakfast, except in the summer - even though Cesar advocates this). So....I made up a new routine for the dogs and for myself. It was slower, calmer, involved alot of waiting all while practicing very calm energy. Well, the results were nothing short of amazing and were instant. Thank you Cesar.

If you missed the Dog Whisperer seminar - I highly recommend picking up Cesar Millan's paperback book entitled How to Raise the PERFECT DOG. This is a pretty quick read and is great for anyone considering a puppy or who has one. Would also make a great stocking stuffer. It was a great reminder for me about some important things I had forgotten about and I enjoyed this book the most of all of Cesar's books.

Watch out for the grim reaper (AKA Roman) on Halloween Night...

he may kiss you to death. Although, one reader sent me an email that Roman looks more like he is dressed up as Ghandi ... and another said a ghost. I think they are both right!

Halloween is a fun change in the daily routine for all family members except pets. Pets don’t care for change and can become nervous and/or aggressive with the increased number of people and vehicles in their territories. Add the potentially hazardous mix of decorations and Halloween candy within the pet’s reach, and it could prove to be a fatal mix unless precautions are taken to keep pets safe on Halloween.

Pets allowed to remain loose on Halloween can be injured or cause injury. An unconfined pet may run out outside and into the path of oncoming traffic when the home’s door is opened to give trick or treaters candy. On the other hand, an unconfined pet (dogs specifically) may feel that children wearing Halloween costumes are territorial risks and bite a child. Black cats and Halloween go together, which makes black cats at high risk for being stolen from their owners on Halloween.

PUMPKIN WAFER DOG TREAT RECIPE

Here is a quick and very easy recipe to make for your dog using pumpkin as the main ingredient.

Ingredients: One 15oz can mashed pure pumpkin (not spiced pie filling); 3/4 cup of cream of wheat (or use rice cereal if your pooch is wheat sensitive). You mix this dry - no need to cook it first; 1/2 cup of dry powered milk.

Directions: Preheat oven 300 F.; Mix up all ingredients; Use a pastry bag to squeeze out rosettes about the size of a dime and place on cookie sheet and bake for about 15 to 20 minutes.

According to Cesar Millan the pumpkin is a miracle food for both diarrhea and constipation, remember canned pumpkin (not raw or the spicy pie-ready kind). Pumpkin is loaded with fiber and beta-carotene, which the dog's body converts to vitamin A. Don't give your dog or pup too much, as too much vitamin A can be toxic for them. A couple of teaspoons a day for the small dogs and the big dogs can have a couple of tablespoons.

A recent trip to Petland in South Surrey, (near Grandview Corners at 22nd and 160th), has prompted me to do this blog. You see I had dropped into Petland in search of a new dog leash for my dog Madeline. I usually shop at Tisol for its pricing, variety and customer service (and the fact they do not sell live animals) but I was feeling lazy and decided that I'd stop in at Petland as I was right by there. I parked my car and entered the store. The first thing I saw was a poor little puppy in a bottomless metal pen in the doorway, he had no toys, no bed and nothing to lay down on but the hard floor. He was or looked to me to be a Jack Russell puppy and if anyone knows that breed they know how active this breed is. Well...this little guy was lifeless and had no energy at all - he just stood there staring. I was in shock, I looked around the store and I noticed other small frightened animals in pens for sale. Did I step back in time? Do people really still purchase pets from pet stores? Have people not heard of puppy mills? And, do they not realize what hell puppies go through in a puppy mill.

In Loving Memory of a Dog named Jake

I recently lost a great dog named Jake who I have had the honour of knowing for about five years. He was both a friend and a client. I say that I lost him even though he was not my dog because he’d become part of my life. And Jake’s owners have lost their beloved dog, constant companion, member of their family, and truly a goodwill ambassador for the Doberman Pinscher breed or any breed for that matter. I cannot begin to imagine the loss they must feel and will forever feel. Jake was an amazing dog and I have truly never met any dog like him. Physically he was a stunning dog and equally powerful and kind…kind to people and to dogs. Jake was one smart dog. He was an inspiration for many, including myself! Madeline and me had just spent the entire day with Jake two days before he suddenly passed away and I have been in a state of emotional shock since and cannot believe he is gone. I dedicate this poem to Jake, who I deeply miss and who has touched my heart and the hearts of all the people and all the dogs he has known.

This is one hard working industry!

Very good food - yummy!

Madeline recently auditioned for a part on the Fox Network’s television series Human Target. She did very well during the audition and proved just how smart she is – even I did not know she was this smart.

The actual filming of the scene took place this week and it was a very interesting and fun experience. So much so, that I hope Madeline will participate in another production. Her part was basically ‘window dressing’ for a particular scene and her job was to stay in a long-down for a really long time. Hours actually! She did her job well and she had a few moments when the scene got physical and she made a few mistakes – but she very quickly learned from her mistakes and got right back on track. But I am happy to report that she caused no delays in the production and I think she had fun…no… I know she had fun. When she did have a tough time in the scene one of the show’s stars whose character’s name is Christopher Chance took the time to meet her and she let him give her belly rubs and then she was good to go and ready to do her job. The cast and the crew were so friendly to her (and to me) and they all made us both feel like we were part of the crew. They especially made Madeline feel welcome and she glowed in all their love and attention. I had no idea how much work goes into a scene and I have to say this is one hard working industry and the cast and crew of Human Target has certainly earned my respect. I also wanted to mention Ian and Grace of Animal Department. They are the company who hired Madeline – now here are two of the nicest and hardest working people you will ever meet. Ian was kind to Madeline in the way he handled her on set (I was on set watching everything going on with her at all times) and seemed to get right inside her head. Grace took the time to educate me on what was going on ‘on set’ and explained everything. Madeline liked them both and especially bonded with Ian, as he was her handler. She adored him!

At the end of the day both Madeline and me were exhausted but we both had a fantastic experience thanks to the cast and crew of Human Target and especially to Ian and Grace of Animal Department.

Human Target makes its second season premiere on Wednesday, November 17, 2010 on Fox. Madeline and her other non-human co-star ‘Jake’ should appear in an episode in later November or early December. I already have my PVR set to record her debut.

I am truly blessed to have such a great dog!

Wallas needs your help!

Wallas is a recently rescued nine-year old terrier cross that was in very rough shape. A lot of his teeth are rotten and he is going to need some serious dental work. Sweet Wallas has had a very sad life. He was hit by a car when he was just a young pup and was never taken to the vet so he walks with a very bad limp. He was kept on a small porch most of his life and was hardly ever fed. Wallas is such a sweetie and he deserves any kind of help, even the smallest donation, will help.

The Coonhound stands 27 inches tall at the shoulder. He has a short, sleek black coat with tan markings. There are six types of Coonhound but only the Black and Tan Coonhound is recognized in Canada and the United States. The Coonhound is affectionate, good with children, and intelligent. A friendly and lovable dog, the Coonhound is also powerful, rugged, and tireless when on the hunt. Because he typically works at night, the Coonhound uses his voice to attract a hunter's attention once he's treed a raccoon. He has a loud bark - a quality that may not be appreciated by neighbours! A hunter at heart, he is not the dog to live with cats. He should also be socialized and trained early on to discourage a tendency to dig! Not a breed for couch potatoes, the Coonhound needs lots of exercise and attention. He enjoys playing with his people and is unhappy if left alone for long periods. Banks and the Fun Blanket

I awoke this morning feeling extremely grateful for my chosen career and that any given day I have had and continue to have the privilege to work with dogs (and cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, horses, cattle, sheep, chickens, ducks and toads...yes toads) and the people who love and care for them. With that in mind, I'd like to tell you a cute story about a little dog named Banks who recently stayed in my home for a week. Initially Banks did not think it was too fantastic being surrounded by three Doberman Pinschers but as each day went by he warmed up to them. He seemed to like them, he sniffed them, treated them with respect but generally stayed out of their path. Then one day I took one of his little blankets outside to air in the sunshine and when I brought it in, he grabbed it with his teeth (very out of character for this polite little dog) and tossed it into the air several times and then proceeded to jump on and off it several times. I guess it was his fun blanket. All the while this was happening, Madeline (my own Doberman) was watching with a cautious and curious eye - then all of a sudden she bowed her head and threw her front legs down to signal PLAYTIME and away she and Banks went. I gotta tell you I nearly peed my pants laughing - as they played with the fun blanket and chased each other around the kitchen like a couple of nutty puppies. Madeline, by nature gets along with any dog but in terms of playing she is quite picky and chooses to play with only certain dogs and there is no rhyme or reason. But she certainly chose Banks and they played until I had to break it up as the two of them were going to either hurt themselves or wreck the house....not sure which, perhaps both. When I broke up their fun, the two of them were most indignant...with Madeline trotting off to her bed in a full sulk and Banks plopping down on the fun blanket which soon became the nap blanket as the fun was over and Banks was pooped. Again....I am so lucky to work with animals everyday, including fun little dogs like Banks!!!

A Sad Farewell to a very Beloved Jasper

Today's blog is dedicated to one we loved, who has passed away. I will miss you dear Jasper! Jasper was one of my first clients and also, one of my favourites. He was an elderly gentleman dog who was sweet, kind, funny, polite and was always happy to see me when I came for my visit. He always turned my day around - even if our visit was short- no matter what kind of day I was having. Jasper was a much loved dog who will be missed by his owner Lisa as well as those whose hearts he touched and warmed. Including my own. Goodbye dear Jasper - I am a better person to have met you!

A Most Charming Chihuahua

This is Bella - a recent Signature Pet boarder who very quickly found two things....her place in the sun (on our deck) and a place in my heart. She has been my most surprising guest yet! She is extremely smart, friendly, loves to go for walks, cuddle and just hang out in the sun. She has PERFECT house manners, is very polite, does what she is asked and is very easy to care for. Bella is very bright, observant and makes a great watchdog! Her family obviously loves her dearly and has done a terrific job with her socialization and training. In terms of the breed, the Chihuahua's charms include her small size, very large personality, and variety in coat types and colors. The Chihuahua is all dog, fully capable of competing in dog sports such as agility and obedience, and is among the top 10 watchdogs recommended by experts. (Bella is proof of that). Thank you to Stewart's family for allowing me to take care of him while they were on vacation. Stewart is a very well behaved, really funny, polite, and obedient puppy. Stewart has both excellent leash manners and house manners. And he is still a pup! Each day he revealed a different layer of his personality to me - he is truly a wonderful and loving pup. He played well with the resident dogs and respected their status in the home. He has set the standard by which all dogs should behave. Way to go Stewart!

Do you need something to do with your dog this weekend ... then head to Dogwood Off-leash Dog Park located in beautiful and sunny South Surrey, BC. Even on a really hot day, the trails stay cool. There are plenty of water bowls and access to fresh water abounds. After an hour or so at Dogwood - head to Fieldstones Artisan Bakery on Crescent Road at the intersection of Crescent Road and 128th Street. Oh, the baked goods are amazing...so amazing you may need to stand in a wee line up but it is worth it, I promise. Have a great weekend everyone!

Her score was 174/200 and I am not sure where that sits in terms of low score or high score...and quite frankly I don't really care as I am just happy and excited that Madeline won. This is only our second Obedience Trial.

Goodbye Tux and thank you for the fun and joy you brought to our home this past week as our in-home dog boarder. You were a very good dog (you know what they say "good dog - great owners") and we enjoyed your time with our family very much. You were excellent company for Roman and the two of you were instant chums. Sleeping together, following each other around and playing ball ....endlessly. You were lovely to walk on the leash, you walked and played well with the other dogs, you did what was asked of you and you followed all of our house rules. At nighttime, you settled down right away and went to sleep...not a peep. You were even patient with me when I combed your tail.You are a beautiful dog inside and outside! Come back anytime - Roman misses you already!

This past week I had the privilege of taking care of a beautiful three-month old Scottish Terrier. She was adorable, fun, friendly, loved to chase around and play. This afternoon I will return her to her home and I know we will all miss her. I captured her playing by herself in my back yard - no staging just her in her puppy world. Puppies are a great deal of work (more than most people will admit) and I recommend anyone who is considering getting a puppy or who has a puppy to go to Dr. Ian Dunbar's website http://www.siriuspup.com/ where you can read and download free VERY HELPFUL pdf's that are excellent and easy to understand. When I was raising my own puppy - I followed Dr. Dunbar's house training schedule and Madeline had a very successful potty training.

Dear Bart:

Thank you Bart for being the first small dog in Signature Pet Services' in-home boarding program. You see Bart, I did not want to take small dogs because I thought well...I thought they would act like small dogs. But not you....you showed me not all small dogs are the same!

All of us enjoyed your company and it was an amazing experience to watch the body language and interaction between you a little 12-year-old dog (20 lbs) and two Dobermans (whose total weight combined is about 150lbs of brawny muscle mass).

You were a real gift to Roman (who if you read my blog has anxiety issues) who once he accepted you into the pack - was your big brother. He watched over you and made sure you were OK...always looking for you and always keeping an eye on you. One time when we went up the stairs - we did not take you (Bart has trouble with our stairs) and Roman sat with you until we returned. Well, this absolutely astonished me as I've never seen Roman do that before - even with Madeline who he loves.

When Roman went for a walk this afternoon, he was relaxed and his outside anxiety seemed to have diminished at least for today. So thank you Bart - it seems you were the therapy Roman needed all along.

We luv you Bart and you are welcome to come back anytime !

Paw Pacers Sunday Morning Group Walk - sponsored by the BC SPCA

Paw Pacers Walking Group sponsored by the BC SPCA meets every Sunday morning at 9:30am at Morgan Crossing Dog Park (located near Winners at Morgan Crossing). There is plenty of parking so don't worry about that.

This is an organized walk that you join by a once a month $10 donation to the BC SPCA. I joined this walk for the first time on Sunday, May 30. This was the first official walk of the Paw Pacers. We had a small group with dogs ranging from Labs to Dobermans - from Bulldogs to little mixed breeds. Everyone kept to the same pace - which made for great opportunity to chat and for the dogs to get to know each other. This is a fun walk (about 30 minutes this past walk) and a great way to get out and meet new folks in your area, socialize your dogs, get some exercise for yourself and of course have some fun. I really enjoyed everyone I met and their dogs and am looking forward to returning next Sunday. One of the goals of the Paw Pacers' Walking Group is to walk as a group at this year's Paws for a Cause walk in September.

So, don't be shy come out next Sunday (or any Sunday) and join the fun. It does not take too long - everyone is super friendly (including the organizer). You can get your dog out for a walk and then head back to bed!

Dog Friendly Mini-Getaway Weekend Ideas

Hotel Monaco, Portland, Oregon

The first weekend getaway was a trip to Victoria on Vancouver Island. My husband and I took Roman and Madeline to Victoria and we stayed at the Magnolia Hotel. This is a great little boutique hotel … with an awesome restaurant and bar in the lobby. The restaurant is called Prime Steakhouse and was very good. The service was good too. In fact, we ate there both nights….which says a lot! This is a meat lover’s mecca, however, I am a vegetarian and I found plenty to choose from on the menu, including a great bottle of red from the Burrowing Owl Vineyard. The staff was friendly (on the younger side) and great to our dogs. There was no extra service charge for our two dogs – but double check when you reserve – in case that has changed. And no size restriction, which was great news because Roman weighs 85 lbs and Madeline, weighs 58. Most of the guests were in awe of our dogs – one couple (who incidentally had a screaming child) turned their noses up at us but that can happen anywhere. The hotel is centrally located near the busy downtown/inner harbor/Empress and you are less than 2 minutes walking distance to the water.

While we were there we took the dogs to Butchart Gardens, Beacon Hill Park and walking everywhere downtown. There were even several tourists who wanted to pose with Roman…kinda weird but we agreed of course. All in all it was a great trip and we are looking forward to returning again.

The second mini-getaway weekend (also with both dogs) was to the Hotel Monaco in Portland, Oregon. We have actually stayed there twice now – both times with our dogs. I must say I love Portland. This is a great city to visit for shopping and restaurants. The people of Portland are the friendliest people I have ever met on any vacation. Portland is a very green city (which appeals to me) is super pedestrian friendly and the drivers actually respect the crosswalks and such. Portland honestly puts Vancouver’s drivers and hospitality to shame! The Hotel Monaco is an eclectic vintage-style luxury hotel that is also dog friendly. And there is also no restriction on size/weight of dog and no service charge for dogs either. Just make sure that you tell them you are bringing your dog/s when you reserve. When you arrive they actually will have your dog’s name up on a chalkboard welcoming them. So after a long drive it is fun to see a sign that reads “Welcome Roman and Madeline” it also gives you a chance to see how many other dogs are in the hotel (just in case you need to avoid other dogs). The shopping in Portland is fantastic including all the big US department stores of course but also lots of unusual boutiques and shops. And no sales tax. In terms of dining and going out – we stuck to the hotel’s bar and restaurant the Red Star Tavern & Roast House. The food is good and the drinks are AMAZING. If you are thinking of a getting away to the US to take advantage of our strong dollar – I highly recommend you check out the Hotel Monaco in Portland, Oregon.

Early Morning at Crescent Beach, South Surrey, BC

My husband, Me, Roman and Madeline spent this past Saturday morning early at Crescent Beach walking - and at the end of the walk we released them into Blackie Spit off leash dog park. It was an ugly rainy morning and there was no one there at all. You can see they really enjoyed themselves. I too am in the picture - the goofball in the tuque. This is, and will always be my favorite off leash dog park and it is a great reward for my dogs to be let off in there to play after they have been on a rigorous leash walk practicing obedience and leash work.

I am not yet and probably never will be a total advocate of off leash dog parks - but they have their place for some dogs and some situations so long as you are paying a lot of attention to who is there and if they have care and control of their dogs. For example, Roman needs to run off leash to release his pent up energy but he does not yet have very good recall so I do not take him to an off leash park nor is he allowed off leash unless the area is safely fenced. Madeline, on the other hand can go to any off leash park as she has very good recall - so if there is dogs fighting or aggressive chasing going on I can control her and keep her with me. Some dog owners/dog walkers do have control and some do not. I've seen it all....enough said. Hope you enjoy my video!

Just how smart is your dog?

Recently, I purchased these dog toys that when the dog sinks their teeth into them they scream...and boy do they scream. I call them the screaming Barbies. Madeline, typically rips the heck out of any stuffed dog toy and then tries to ingest the remains. nice. Anyways, this toy purchased at the Tisol store in South Surrey, BC, has been a great toy for Madeline. She will contently just lay with it in her mouth and although the toy does get soggy she does not destroy it. She's had it now for about a month or so and while it is a bit on the smelly side is in excellent condition. Both Madeline and Roman have a small basket of toys in our home. House rules are that the toys are ours and we share them with our dogs. It has always been this way. Well, lately Madeline has been helping herself to the screaming Barbie on a regular basis. So if you are interested in how she does this I've captured this on video (yes I am an amateur sorry). I've tried several times to make a video of this but each time I bring out the camera Madeline sits down and refuses to be recorded for video. I hope you enjoy this quick little video. Cheers!

An Excellent Read for Dog Lovers

Merle's Door is a most fantastic read for animal lovers...especially dog lovers. I am not going to give anything away in the book but I will say that I think we underestimate the intelligence in dogs way too much. Anyways, Merle's Door was given to me by a very good 'doggy' friend (thanks Carol) with the instructions that I would love the book and to have lots of kleenex handy. Well I did love the book and the kleenex was handy and needed. I finished the book in one day.

I typically do not read animal stories because they usually end badly but this is an amazing story that truly touched my heart. Merle's Door has been out for a little while so you should be able to pick it up almost anywhere in paperback. Sit back enjoy Merle's journey and those around him who he touched. What a dog!

This is a great read for the long weekend!

Cinnamon Bun Bites for your Dog

As part of my CKC yearly membership I receive Dogs in Canada. It is a magazine that used to cater more to breeders and purebred dogs and now tends to also include the non-pedigree pooches. Although I am an owner of two purebreds, either way, I do not care as I simply just enjoy the magazine.

As mentioned in my earlier blog, I am going to review all things dog…including recipes for dog treats. I am going to specifically review the recipe Cinnamon Bun Bites that originally appeared in Dogs in Canada May 2009.

I made this recipe once and made several changes to it. I remade the recipe and found it worked much better. I am not criticizing the chef/writer of the recipe as different types of ingredients and styles of baking differ and may sometimes alter the original recipe’s end result.

I have to say that I personally did sample one of these little buns with a little butter and they are very very delicious. One of my very special clients and Roman’s dog massage therapist will be the recipients of these treats just as soon as they are iced up and ready to go.

Here are the ingredients:

2 C. whole-wheat flour
1 t. baking powder
I left out the salt
½ C. & 2 T. water
¼ C. canola oil
1 Lrg egg
2 t. honey
1 t. cinnamon
1/8 C. pecans (crushed up)

Cream cheese drizzle (optional): ¼ C. light cream cheese mixed with a bit of water

Preheat oven to 350°

Line cookie sheet with parchment paper

First Bowl: combine all dry ingredients

Second bowl: combine egg, oil and water and whisk together

Add ingredients from second bowl into first bowl and mix. You will need to use your hands to mush the ingredients together into a nice ball. Slightly oil your hands and countertop and then roll out or press out the dough into a rectangle. Approx: 8” by 14”. Once you have attained this shape, drizzle the honey and sprinkle the cinnamon and nuts onto the dough. Roll up the dough like a jellyroll from the long edge. Once rolled, slice half-inch in thickness and place on cookie sheet. Put in oven and bake anywhere from 15 to 20 minutes.

Cool and ice with cream cheese icing (or not). Your dogs will love these…and so will you.

Happy Birthday Madeline!

This weekend, we celebrated Madeline’s 5th birthday with an afternoon doggy party complete with martinis called Scoobie Doos and dog treats from the Three Dog Bakery. We’ve nicknamed our Dobermans the Scoobies so thought the drink was appropriate.

Madeline is a near-perfect dog and if there is a god I thank him everyday for her. Madeline came to my husband and me on the August long weekend in 2005. We drove to the US to pick her up – she was just a tiny puppy. In fact, Madeline was the tiniest puppy of her litter. We don’t like to call her the runt – but she was in fact the runt. But she was a friendly, bright and outgoing runt who seemed to have the best temperament of the puppies – which is very important in a Doberman Pinscher.

Madeline and I have been through a lot together. At first, our personalities clashed (just ask my husband) but slowly she began to trust me and I her. Today, the love I feel for her is very strong and yes some days when she is on the naughty list not so much and vice versa for her I am sure.

She has been with me through thick and thin. She was there the morning I was struck down in a cross walk on my way to catch my bus to work in the city. In fact, she was nearly struck too. You see my husband had her leashed and in front of me in the crosswalk and when some woman struck me and tossed me up onto her hood and kept driving … she just missed Madeline. Once I was tossed off the moving vehicle and dragged myself to the curb it was Madeline who I hugged while I sat in shock awaiting my husband to call the emergency crews. It took along time for my memories to gel from that day but I do remember the firefighters at the scene asking me “was she friendly?” as I was literally hanging onto her for dear life. Madeline was also there for me in my career highs and my lows. Disappointments with friends and decisions I made. She was there for my all triumphs...all my losses. Always listening – never giving advice. What a dog!

I can and do take Madeline with me everywhere. She is good in big cities, hotels, elevators, airports, cars, the bus (yes, once my old bus driver picked her and I up and drove us home) and with people and all animals (including wildlife). She is fun, super smart, friendly, athletic, aloof, calm, quiet, brave, sensitive, obedient and a diva all rolled up into one stunning dog.

I treat Madeline like a dog – because she is one and that is why she is so happy, content and so special. I do not give her baby names or talk to her in a baby-voice. She is not allowed on the furniture, to eat from/at the table or anything else human-like. She is walked almost everyday, goes to obedience class, goes to the dog park and loves to play at the beach.

If you see Madeline and me, she is the one by my side!

Welcome to Dogwood Off-leash Dog Park, South Surrey, BC

This is now my third visit to the Dogwood off-leash dog park in South Surrey. While I am not an advocate of off-leash parks, this one has lots to offer and I find myself being drawn there again and again. And yes, I soon may be changing my tune about off-leash dog parks...mmmmmm

The parking is plenty and the park can get quite busy (although it seems to come in waves) but there is lots of room and lots to do. Of course, in my opinion, the best thing to do at Dogwood is walk the trails with your dog. I had the best experience walking with Eva of Healthy Dog Services (one of several off-leash dog walkers that bring their dog clients to the park). Madeline, my Doberman (pictured above on one of the beautiful trails) and I joined Eva's pack for about an hour. It was great fun to watch all the dogs interact and the posturing and communicating they all do to let the other dog know where they stand. All the dogs got along really well! Eva had a great pack from a toy-sized dog to a pair of full-sized Huskies. The dogs chased, played and all greeted other dogs on the trails in a healthy way and it was so much fun to watch. If your dog loves mud - watch out there are some nice muddy/swampy areas throughout the trails.

In addition to walking the trails, there is a pond to play in (yuck) and lots of grassy areas for dogs to run around in. There is a covered shelter area (pictured above) and a bulletin board of dog information and related services. There is a corral-type area for dogs as well - but watch out if you have a little breed because they can escape. There are washrooms, water for dogs and benches to sit, relax and watch your dog socialize. So far, all the people I met were super friendly and did not get at all bothered by the site of my Doberman - which is nice because sometimes people can be really unkind to her for no reason as she is a well socialized friendly dog who would not hurt anyone - unless of course you are a burglar.

I would easily give Dogwood off-leash dog park a 9/10 rating and I plan to head back there on Friday if I can. Maybe I will become an off-leash dog park advocate yet...only time will tell.

Welcome to Morgan Crossing Dog Park, South Surrey, BC, Canada

This is my first official blog - yahoo for me. I've actually commented on two other blogs but thought I'd branch out and blog on my own. My plan is to blog about all things dogs - from reviewing dog books, collars, toys, treats, recipes, things to do with your dog, places to go with your dog and like I said ....all things dog.

Today I made my second visit to a suburban-style dog park located next to the shops at Morgan Crossing in beautiful South Surrey.

My first visit was the grand opening a couple of weekends ago where the park was full of new visitors and lookie-loo types. Well, I went back today between dog sitting appointments and it was virtually empty. I hung around a while and then I noticed a couple of gals there with their two dogs. I popped into the park and shot a picture of the park so to give an idea of the type and size of the park. Now this is a dog park whose style trumps its substance, however, it is a dog park and it was built with good intentions. This dog park is probably best for the small to medium sized dogs and for puppies to play with each other and experience the joy of being off leash. It is not really a comfortable size to toss a ball and play for those athletic breeds (best you go to Dogwood or Crescent Beach). For all you dog owners in the area, I hope you check out this park, enjoy it and follow the rules and pick up your dog's poop. I would give this park (based on its size) a 7 out of 10. Remember it is small but it has nice little stone benches to sit on to enjoy watching your small dog or pup play.

Coming on May 30 at 9:30 is a brand new dog walking group entitled the Paw Pacers Club. This club will be gathering at the above-noted dog park for a group walk every Sunday. The local SPCA sponsors this club and anyone joining the club pays $10 each Sunday (which goes towards all the good work the SPCA does). I understand there will be walking, training, and information sessions. This will be a great way to socialize your suburban dog or puppy and meet new people. I will be bringing one of my Dobermans to join this walking group - and I am very excited about it. I will return to blog about this, once the club has launched its first walk.
